Its indicatrix is a triaxial ellipsoid. dispersion: Change of any optical property with wavelength. indicatrix: The three-dimensional surface describing the variation in refractive index with relationship to vibration direction of incident light. isotropic mineral: A mineral with the same refractive index regardless of vibration direction. Its indicatrix is a sphere.

Lunar cryptomaria: Mineralogy and composition of ancient volcanic deposits

Ancient lunar volcanic deposits, known as cryptomaria, have been detected by remote telescopic and orbital measurements since the 1970s. Cryptomaria are most easily identified by the presence of darkhalo impact craters and are associated with a mare basalt mineralogy, which is indicated by two pyroxene spectral absorption features near 1 μm and 2 μm in the visible to near-infrared (VNIR) wavele...

Mineralogy of Martian atmospheric dust inferred from thermal infrared spectra of aerosols

[1] We have utilized optical constants derived from thermal infrared spectra acquired by the Mariner 9 Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (M9 IRIS) and Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS TES), during periods of relatively high dust/low water ice opacity, to generate synthetic transmission and emission spectra of the atmospheric dust. Using libraries of transmission and em...

Statistical Analysis of the Links among LunarMare Soil Mineralogy, Chemistry, and Reflectance Spectra

A principal goal of the Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium (LSCC) is to evaluate tools that might be successfully used in remote compositional analysis of the lunar surface. Mathematical methods are extremely valuable to assess whether variations exist in a statistically significant manner, independent of their interpretation. The bounds of widely used correlation of visible to near-infrare...

A Process Mineralogy Approach to Gravity Concentration of Tantalum Bearing Minerals

The historic Penouta mine in northwest Spain is the focus of efforts to extract tantalum from tin mining waste. This paper describes the characterisation of the tantalum mineralogy of waste material from the deposit. Characterisation was realised using quantitative mineralogy and geochemistry. This paper further identifies other phases of interest and investigates the potential for extraction u...

Crystal structure

In mineralogy and crystallography, a crystal structure is a unique arrangement of atoms in a crystal. A crystal structure is composed of a unit cell, a set of atoms arranged in a particular way; which is periodically repeated in three dimensions on a lattice. The spacing between unit cells in various directions is called its lattice parameters. The symmetry properties of the crystal are embodie...
